ECHO Kids is a program focusing on “whole child health care” and finding a medical home for all the kids in Taos and Colfax counties. Our area of Northern New Mexico has a poverty rate of over 24%, and employer ability to offer insurance at less than 20%. We therefore have a large portion of our community going uninsured. While up to 70% of our kids qualify for the state Medicaid program, many still don’t, or don’t know that they qualify. We have created an Access to Care Voucher System that ensures all of our children can receive well child health care visits and non-hospitalization sick care visits. This is available from prenatal care up to 18 years of age. We are also collaborating with the state’s Income Support Division to qualify and enroll those children in programs where families may not be aware of eligibility. Additionally, we are networking with other medical service programs and participating pediatricians and family practice physicians in our region to coordinate referrals for the children and their families into existing community programs.
